Promethea comic questions and answers

1: Are there any prominent symbols? If so what are they and how are they used?

A:         Recently in class we read the Comic Promethea, a comic about a story. The story happens to be a spirit of a girl that never dies but re-inhabits others body’s and lives on. Sounds kind of awkward and a little bit evil, I assure you be the end of the comic I was thinking otherwise.  A few symbols I found (or think I my have found) in Promethea were overcoming your fears but more like an internal fear of the inevitable and destiny in the sense of becoming the best you can become, who you were meant to be. I also noticed the Ankh, which is on her armor and is the symbol of life, Promethea as a character is always accompanied by light sun colors. The ankh makes me feel more drawn to her as a character that defends life. The eternal life.

           

2: Discuss elements of he story you were able to connect with.

A:         Well I have always loved ancient Egyptian folklore and symbols, so upon seeing the cover I was already interested in the subject matter because of all of the ancient symbols decorating the front. Honestly I felt connected with most of the interior subject matter as well. A girl writing a term paper but young enough but old enough as well to feel the stress of knowing or wanting to know whom you are. The fact that she turns into a bad ass, ass-kicking female superhero with Egyptian background? Wayy to cool not to pick up or get into at all.

3: What changes would you make to adapt this story into another medium. What medium would you use? What changes would you make?

A:         The type used in this comic is very very difficult to read and actually almost stopped me from finishing because it  hurt my eyes so much. I would have to change it to a graphic novel medium. I don’t want to lose the comic style so much, I want to keep the illustrations because they are a huge part of what makes the story. I feel though, in a graphic novel that it would be much easier for the reader to enjoy and as an author you could explain and embellish a very intricate story, making it an easier read as well.

Describe what is happening.

My version? :

            At first it looks like this woman is like enchanting the rooster but then the next page has a rooster man standing over her strapped down to an alter? So maybe in the first one she gets frightened cause the rooster is magical and she knows its evil. Then all the sudden all these damn roosters are turning into people and rampaging the town hanging husbands and such. Then there is a sort of what looks like a civil war between the people and the rooster people. At the very last page it shows the roosters have “won” and are waving the flag of France like the overthrew the government and now chickens r ruling the world. Cest la Vie?

Week Eight- Ethics and Representation

I’ve always wanted to watch Persepolis, so I was thrilled when I got the opportunity to do so. I think Marjane Satrapi is very successful in challenging the stereotypes in Persepolis. One of my favorite parts is when she yells at those girls making fun of her in the booth for being who she is and she’s proud of it. People really just need to get over themselves.  She constantly stood up for her self and her culture, women’s rights. Like I guess I don’t have a favorite part because I love the whole film itself, its like one big scene to me. It sort of feels like I grew up with her because we watched her grow up and go threw traumas and survive. We watched her learn things and learned them with her.

It was really well written and directed. Iv read some of the comic  and I think the film translated it well, almost word for word and scene for scene. I think the part that struck me the most, not saying it was my favorite part-but its definitely stood out, was when her grandmother got angry at her for getting that man in trouble for ‘harassing her’ and arrested. At the time it did not strike me as a bad thing, in fact I was like “yeah girl! Whoo!” “he was an ass!”, but when the grandmother got so angry with her it made me question why it was so bad. He didn’t really deserve to be arrested for such a petty thing. I think I only thought that way because I am around the same age as she was portrayed and would have reacted the same way….probably.

Week Seven- Legitimation of the Comics

This week I read some of Art Spiegelman's Complete Maus (Vol. 1 and 2) I somewhat enjoyed the comic, but honestly I would probably have enjoyed it more if I had read it in a tangible form rather than on the Internet. I found the work interesting enough though that I would like to buy the complete volume in book form so I can fully enjoy the read. I also found in difficult to read since it was translated. I feel like they could have transited it way better because right now I feel like it was just copy and pasted into Google translate and it did a bad job. So in that aspect it took away from my enjoyment of the story. not enough to stop me form continuing to finish it. Maus deals with an extremely heavy subject, The Holocaust. I myself have a lot more knowledge than I like about the subject since I attended a Jewish middle school and had to take a class every year for eight years on the holocaust. Maus does a great job at making the information swallow able without sacrificing its integrity as a piece of history. 

Spiegelman's portrayal of the Jews as mice and the cats as Nazis really helps to paint a black and white picture of the events that unfolded during the massacre. Its a tough read but I think that everyone should try and read a bit of it, at least a few chapters, this is an event that should be heard and never forgotten. This is a piece of history we do not want repeated in anyway. A good warning to all.

Week Three- The Comic Strip

This Week I read a bunch of Peanuts strips from The Complete D.C.P.eanuts by Saint Malaclypse. I was interested in reading Peanuts since Iv seen probably seen every movie they have made for Peanuts- especially the Christmas Cult Classic that I watch with my mom every year curled up on the couch with some spiked eggnog! I think most people enjoy peanuts because its very relatable, everybody knows THAT person. whether its Lucy to Lionel you are bound to know someone with those characteristics or have them yourself. That's what makes Peanuts so successful, although I do remember reading them as a child in the Saturday (or Sunday?  I forget) comic strips in the news papers and laughing alot at them, as I did this time around. However this time I was laughing for different reasons. when I was a child I found them silly or I didn't really understand the logic behind Charlie Brown's narration or comments. I just laughed cause I thought I should, or the comics looked funny. Now I can understand that those kids all have social problems and I can now pick them out and understand why they act that way. take Lucy for example, I thought she was a freaking lil bitch when I was a kid. Now I just know shes probably insecure so she has to have the upper hand all the time and control everything. Its really interesting going back to all these comics that iv read or looked at as a kid and could not fully understand at the time but now I am an adult and its much better hahaha.

Get it?  Lucy......She's in the sky, haha.

Week Two- Understanding Comics

I chose to make a short wordless comic about how much I hate alarms. Lately I have been sleeping threw my alarms but I have a feeling I'v actually been waking up and just hitting the snooze button in attempt to gain more sleep. Even if it only happens to be for 5 more minutes.
Making a wordless comic was a lot of fun, I had to come up with something simple enough to covey a message but I wanted it to be relatable at the same time. I might have cheated a little by using the Zzz'z to get a point across but I still think it fulfill the 'wordless comic' feeling. I probably could have still gotten the point across but I felt it tied it together better.
